Ancient Faith, Living Church: Qualified & Equipped

Over the last two weeks we’ve been reminded that Christians are called to love and help their neighbor—and even their enemies. Today we return to the central point of God’s activity. Christians are called to listen and trust God. As Jesus spends time with Mary and Martha, we see a familiar tension manifesting itself. Martha is doing a good thing, but she is neglecting a better thing—listening to the powerful and saving Word of God. In our Old Testament reading, we see the subsequent challenge. Sarah and Abraham listen intently to God’s promise, but Sarah responds with doubt and even laughter. But less than a year later her laughs of doubt were laughs of joy as God kept his promise and she gave brith to a son. We are reminded yet again: With God, all things are possible. (Mt. 19)
