Hearts Longing: For Peace

Last week, Jesus implored us to keep careful watch for his return. He guided us to examine our hearts and minds so that we would not be caught unprepared. This week, we see the Lord’s investment in this preparation in the person and work of John the Baptist. John is a man of humility and lived following God’s mission for him. He implored people to repent of their sins, but was unafraid to confront those who were confident in their own righteousness. As we make our preparations for Christ’s second coming, the message of John the Baptist lifts our eyes to the coming Christ. In him we have peace. Appropriately, this Sunday’s Advent candle is known as the peace candle. As our attention shifts towards Bethlehem, we recognize this child is the Prince of Peace. But peace can only be present where wickedness has been eradicated. Isaiah gives us a picture of how our Judge operates and the world he promises to establish.
