The Cost: of Obedience
Today, we remember the events leading up to the death of our Lord Jesus. In many ways, we feel the heaviness of these historical events. We see the cowardice, the selfishness, and the brutality of mankind. Close friends of Jesus abandon him, deny knowing him, and betray him for less than a couple thousand dollars. Enemies hate him without reason—paying scoundrels to make up things about him. Leaders who should have championed truth and justice turn a blind eye for the sake of convenience. Our sorrow swells with each tragic scene. But this was not something that happened to Jesus. The Son of God chose this path for us. He humbled himself throughout his life and death. On Palm Sunday, we see his striking humility as he rides into Jerusalem on a donkey. On Maundy Thursday, we note how he loved his disciples to the end. On Good Friday, we marvel at his commitment to our salvation. The Almighty Son of God humbled himself to die in our place!
