Come and See: The Gate
Each year, we meditate on a beloved illustration: Jesus as our Good Shepherd. Throughout the Holy Scriptures, God unfolds this beautiful picture. So many of Israel’s heroes (Abraham, Moses, and David) were shepherds, first and foremost. Yet, many were not faithful shepherds. Throughout her history, Israel had been led by selfish and sinful shepherds. Priests introduced idols into their spiritual diets. Prophets spoke of peace as predators stalked in the shadows. Kings led their subjects to the slaughter. Sheep need to be protected and provided for. They cannot take care of themselves. Spiritually speaking, we have the same needs. Our Good Shepherd knows this and begins with a confusing but comforting analogy. Not only is he the Good Shepherd, but he is the Gate. He warns us that anyone who does not enter through the Gate is someone bent on our harm. But God is still in control. The same Savior who gave up his life for us continues to keep watch and keep us safe.
