Come and See: The I AM

One plus one equals two. It’s a mathematical concept we have taken for granted since we learned arithmetic. But, today in our songs and readings, we celebrate what we cannot comprehend. Our God tells us that he is One. At the same time, God reveals himself as three distinct persons—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. One plus one plus one equals one. One essence. One substance. One nature. I AM who I AM.

In the Creation account, we learn that our Triune God made everything out of nothing just by his Word. And what a world he made! Everything was good. When it was brought together, it was very good. And even though it did not stay that way, our Triune God continues his creative work in redeeming his creation. The Father planned our salvation. The Son secured it through his life, death, and resurrection. The Spirit testifies to this reality and nurtures and grows the faith in our hearts. We worship the Triune God who is transcendent—above and beyond this world— because he has loved us and given himself to make us his very own.
