The Kingdom of Heaven: Calls the Unworthy

Our Triune God—Father, Son, and Spirit—is holy beyond our comprehension. Yet, he has chosen to not only redeem sinners, but also work through sinners. In today’s readings, we see God doing both. Moses, Matthew, and Saul were all notorious sinners in their own rights. One was a murderer, another a traitorous tax collector, and the third a persecutor of the Church of God. From our perspective, these men deserved condemnation, not mercy. God’s powerful mercy changed the lives of these men—eternally and temporally. Moses went from leading sheep to leading the people of God through the wilderness to the Promised Land. Matthew went from taking wealth from others to sharing the riches of God’s mercy. Saul, the former persecutor of the Church, became a church-planter. God rejoices to show mercy!
