The Kingdom of Heaven: Contends Faithfully
God’s first command is short and to the point. You shall have no other gods. We think idolatry isn’t a threat to sophisticated, modern minds like ours. In our minds, idolatry is the stuff of ancient temples, found only among aboriginal tribes or in period-piece movies. Though we may have moved beyond bowing down to graven images, we have not progressed beyond idolatry. A god is not just a graven image, but anything you look to for good things, anything you fear, love, or trust above all else. Our idols are the things that keep us up at night with anxious thoughts. Our idols are things and the people we can’t live without. Our idols are places we turn to when times get tough or we feel like we’ve lost hope. As we carefully examine our hearts, we begin to realize that most of our idols are blessings from above that have become of greater importance than God himself. Despite our proclivity to idolatry, our God remains committed to us. He is powerful. He is trustworthy. He is love. All idols pale in comparison to the One, True God.
