He Saves: By Bringing Light

Look the Lamb of God! John the Baptist’s exclamation is well-known by many of us. But have you ever thought about how strange a thing this is to say? In a day and age when people were looking for a lion, the Lord provides a lamb. While many were seeking a revolutionary figure, instead God gifts a redemptive one. Why does John shout about such a meek and docile creature? Because this perfectly encapsulates our problem and its solution. We did not need a brave figure to lead us in our battles. We did not need an encourager to pick us up when we were down and show us a better way. We did not need a teacher who would give us some helpful corrections. We need a Savior—someone who would bear our guilt and shame and take it away. This Lamb of God is also the foundation and sustenance for Christian living, as God works in us to live according to his perfect purposes and overflow with thanksgiving. His triumph through the cross is our glorious hope!
